grat·i·tude
 /ˈɡradəˌt(y)o͞od/
noun.

a. the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

‘Tis the season of thankfulness and my week has been full of it!

On Friday morning, I spent time with my students discussing the idea of giving. We brainstormed a list of people who give to us, followed by a list of things we can give to others. I was so impressed by their thoughtfulness as they spoke of thankfulness for their parents, siblings, extended families, friends, teachers, neighbours, and even pets. Even more impressive was their dedication to giving others kindness, hope and love. This collective spirit made me want to cry tears of joy.

The other day, it struck me that this past year has been full of the most wonderful blessings and I wonder how it could ever be surpassed in the future. Now, as I sit here with a warm cup of tea, the smell of apple crisp baking and a pile of tests to grade, I cannot help but smile.

So, in the spirit of this holiday season, here is a short list of things for which I am grateful.

  • A hot cup of coffee to get me through the day.
  • A pantry full of fresh food ready to be transformed into a thanksgiving feast.
  • A cuddly kitten who loves to spend time with me.
  • A positive, healthy state of mind.
  • A friend or two who set aside time to listen and encourage.
  • A mother and father-in-law who consistently demonstrate selflessness.
  • A sister who puts her whole self into loving others and, in turn, inspires me.
  • A mom who works harder than anyone I know in order to support her family.
  • A dad who makes me laugh and teaches me what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
  • A husband who spent his morning cleaning the house, while I went out for groceries.
  • A classroom to call my own with a group of students who love to learn.
  • A team of educators and administrators who support each other through the good and the bad.
  • A school board that promotes the well-being of its staff and students.
  • A province full of beautiful landscapes to explore.
  • A country that believes in inclusion, acceptance and peace.
  • A God who forgives, guides, and eternally loves.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

No matter where you’re at this year or how things are going for you, remember there is always something to be grateful for.

Much love.
