MoH
noun.
a. my other half; maid of honour
When I was little and our family was awaiting a new baby, the doctors were confident that my mom was having a boy. But, as I’m told, I was having none of it. I flat out told the man, “Mommy is having a SISTER for me.”
A few months later and what do you know, I was right.
My sister was born in January 1997 in the middle of a snowstorm when I was 4 1/2 years old. This age difference did cause some distance at times, but as we got older, the years melted away. I don’t know what I would do without her.
This post if for you, sis.
My sister is…
- A built-in best friend. Not only do I have a sister, but I have a friend for life. There was no need to worry about who would be my maid of honour at my wedding, and there will be no question who will be the best babysitter for our future children. God has graciously provided me with just that person right from the very beginning.
- A sounding board. If I ever need advice, need to vent, or just want to share a story, Heather is always there to listen, commiserate or celebrate. She’s the one person I know I can always go to for support and understanding. But she’ll also tell me when I’m being ridiculous, and for that I’m grateful, too.
- A personal stylist. Double the closet space! Heather has an incredible sense of style, and I’m always borrowing something from her closet. She has the guts to buy the things that are slightly out of my comfort zone, but end up loving anyway. She’s my favourite shopping partner.
- A talented photographer. Along with her sense of style, Heather has an eye for design. She’s always there to snap a pic for you, and she’ll always get the perfect shot. Let’s be honest, the best photos on my Instagram are either taken by her or they’re my best attempts at seeing the world her way.
- A perfect road trip partner. My sister is an adventurer. She likes to explore the world and share it with the rest of us. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we do, it’s always a fun time.Plus, we have much of the same taste in music, and it makes for the best karaoke sessions.
- Someone to talk to in the middle of the night. Back when we were younger, we requested to share a room so we could try out the bunkbed lifestyle. We shared many late-night conversations, me from the top bunk and her from the bottom. It’s nearly impossible to feel scared or alone with another person so close to you.
- Someone to send silly Snapchats to on the regular. We may not talk every day, but we definitely send the silliest faces to each other on a weekly basis. You’d be surprised how much you can get across with a photo that only lasts 10 seconds or less.
- Someone who makes me laugh when I’m feeling sad. Heather has my dad’s quick wit and sense of humour. My favourite is when someone says something strange or makes a funny noise, and she makes us repeat it just to get a laugh. It never fails to make the whole room smile.
- Someone who knows all my quirks and loves me anyway. I’m sure she could list a dozen of them and I could probably name a few of hers, but regardless, we embrace all of each other’s unique qualities. That’s the beauty of being a family and that’s what makes our relationship so special.
- Someone whose compassionate heart teaches me to be better. Heather is passionate about creating change in the world through unconditional love. She sees a need, she sets a goal, and she steps out to make a difference. I may be older, but I have so much to learn from her.
